Easy DIY Bedroom Accent Wall with a Shelf
How We Created a DIY Bedroom Accent Wall with a Modern Farmhouse Style Board and Batten
If you’re looking to add character and charm to your bedroom, a board and batten accent wall is a perfect way to go. This modern farmhouse design has become increasingly popular for its ability to bring a cozy, yet sophisticated feel to any space. We recently transformed a plain wall into a statement piece, incorporating a built-in shelf for added function and style. Here’s how we did it!
Why a Bedroom Accent Wall?
Adding an accent wall, especially with board and batten, is a great way to enhance the modern farmhouse style in your home. It gives your bedroom a unique focal point that can completely transform the space. It’s an easy way to incorporate architectural interest without committing to a full-room renovation. Plus, with our built-in shelf addition, the wall now serves both a decorative and practical purpose.
If you’re thinking of upgrading your space, consider adding a bedroom accent wall. It’s a DIY project that delivers a big impact without breaking the bank. Whether you go for a bold color like we did or stick to neutrals, it’s a great way to personalize your bedroom.
Materials We Used for the DIY Bedroom Accent Wall
- Primed 1×4 boards for the battens
- Spackle to fill holes
- Caulk for the seams
- Sherwin Williams Pewter Green paint
- Fuji Semi-pro sprayer for a smooth, professional finish
Accent Wall: Planning and Layout
The project started with careful planning. Megan, with her eye for interior design, helped design the layout to ensure the spacing between battens was even and aesthetically pleasing. We decided on a spacing of 22″ between each batten, giving the wall a clean, balanced look without overwhelming the space.
We also incorporated a built-in shelf at a height of 80″, adding an extra layer of functionality and visual interest to the accent wall. The shelf not only breaks up the vertical lines but also serves as a practical modern farmhouse-style touch, providing a perfect spot to display décor or store items.
Installation of the DIY Bedroom Accent Wall
Once we had the design down, Megan and I got to work installing the battens. We used primed 1×4 boards, which were cut to size and attached to the wall. The clean, straight lines of the board and batten gave the room that sought-after modern farmhouse feel, with its blend of traditional elements and contemporary flair.
Filling and Caulking
After securing the battens and shelf, we filled all the nail holes with spackle to create a seamless surface. This step is crucial for giving the wall that polished, professional look. Once the spackle dried, we sanded it smooth, ensuring it blended perfectly with the boards.
Next, we caulked all the joints where the battens met the wall and where the boards intersected. This not only makes the design look cleaner but also prevents gaps from appearing as the wood contracts or expands over time.
Painting the Accent Wall
After the prep work was finished, it was time to paint. My brother Thomas stepped in to lend a hand with the paint job. Using a Fuji Semi-pro sprayer, we achieved even coverage that made the entire project look flawless. We chose Sherwin Williams Pewter Green, a rich color that complements the modern farmhouse aesthetic. The sprayer allowed us to get a smooth, professional finish quickly, which would have been hard to achieve with a brush or roller.
Final Look
The transformation was incredible! The combination of the board and batten design with the built-in shelf added depth and character to the room. The Pewter Green color gave the space a bold, yet soothing feel that’s perfect for a bedroom, and the modern farmhouse vibe brought warmth and style together beautifully.
