The Best Walk In Pantry Cabinets, In Our Opinion

When designing the perfect pantry, walk in pantry cabinets are key to creating both a functional and stylish space. We recently finished our walk-in pantry in our Barndominium, this is what we decided on!

Locally Made, Custom Cabinets

Our cabinets were crafted locally by a talented cabinet maker and are made from beautiful poplar wood. Instead of the traditional closed cabinetry, we opted for an open-faced design with no doors, which creates an airy and accessible feel. The adjustable shelves allow us to customize the storage space as needed, making it perfect for our pantry essentials.

What to do?

Before we started the project, we struggled with deciding how to make the most of the pantry space. We wanted to maximize storage, but we didn’t want it to feel cluttered or too utilitarian. We went back and forth on whether to go with traditional closed cabinets or open shelving. Ultimately, we decided that open-faced cabinets would strike the perfect balance between function and style, giving us plenty of storage space while still keeping the pantry visually appealing.

Picking Out a Paint Color…

Choosing the paint color was surprisingly one of the hardest decisions we faced during the project. We wanted a shade that would complement the natural wood of the butcher block countertops while also fitting into the overall modern farmhouse aesthetic. We went through several paint swatches, trying to find the perfect balance between bold and timeless. After much debate and a few test samples on the walls, we finally landed on Sherwin Williams Artichoke Green. It was the perfect choice, bringing warmth and depth to the space without overwhelming it, but it definitely took some time to get there!

Before Installing the Walk in Pantry Cabinets

Before we could even begin installing the cabinets, we had to carefully plan and install the beadboard on the walls first. This was an important step because the cabinets were designed to be open-faced and without backs, meaning the beadboard would be fully visible through the shelving. We wanted everything to look cohesive, so painting the beadboard in the Artichoke Green color from Sherwin Williams before the cabinet installation was crucial. It took extra time to get everything aligned and painted properly, but doing this step in advance ensured that the entire wall would have a polished and seamless look once the cabinets were in place.

Before Painting the Pantry Cabinets…

Installing the cabinets was an exciting step, but it required careful planning to make sure everything fit perfectly. Once we confirmed that the custom cabinets were sized and aligned exactly as we envisioned in the U-shaped layout, the next step was painting them. We decided to paint them in the garage to avoid any mess in the house and ensure an even finish. Using Sherwin Williams Artichoke Green, we gave each cabinet a few coats of paint. We let them fully dry before bringing them inside. Once dried, the installation process went smoothly. It was rewarding to see our vision finally come together with the cabinets fitting seamlessly into the space.
