What Is A Barndominium? Why We Built One!
What is a Barndominium? We’re going to go over what makes them different from a traditional home and why we decided to build one!
I’m sure you’ve heard of a Barndominium, but are you wondering if it’s the right fit for you? What is a Barndominium, exactly? It’s a home that combines the rustic charm of a barn or shed with the comfort and functionality of a modern living space.
Barndominiums are versatile, often more affordable than traditional homes, and provide ample room for both living and working.
WHAT IS A BARNDOMINIUM?
Main Difference
One of the key differences in a Barndominium is the framing. The main load of the structure is entirely supported by the exterior walls, allowing for a completely open interior. Without any load-bearing walls inside, you have total flexibility to design your floor plan however you like!
Large Garage
We loved the idea of having a large garage, which is one of the biggest draws of building a Barndominium. They make it easy to design a massive garage! For our home, we designed a 40′ by 40′ space with an 18′ high ceiling, which even allowed us to install an indoor basketball hoop!
We did decide to also install a loft space on the back half of the garage. A great place for storage or a flex space.
In Floor Heat
I can’t say enough how much we LOVE our in-floor heat! It’s by far the most comfortable home I’ve ever lived in. It’s energy-efficient, and there isn’t a single cold spot in the house! One thing we didn’t expect was how quiet it is compared to a forced air system.
Open Floor Plan
With not having to worry about wall placement, we let our imaginations run wild! We loved the idea of having large family gatherings with enough room for everyone.
Zero-Entry
Our old house had steps at every door to come in the house. Most Barndominium homes have zero entry. That means, no stairs coming in from the outside or the garage. We actually use a service cart to wheel in groceries!
More House for the Money
This was probably the #1 reason we chose a Barndominium. We were able to get the square footage we wanted while staying within budget. It allowed us to include six bathrooms, a mudroom with a walk-in closet, a large pantry, two laundry rooms, and a garage that’s much more than just a place to park cars!
