Homemade Gravy from Scratch: The Ultimate Guide to Rich, Savory Perfection
There’s nothing quite like the taste of homemade gravy from scratch. Whether it’s poured over my basic mashed potato recipe or drizzled on roast meats, this rich and savory sauce elevates any meal! There’s no way I can ever go back to store-bought gravies!
With just a few pantry staples like flour and butter, this homemade gravy comes together easily, allowing you to create a smooth, flavorful sauce in under 20 minutes!
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Quick & Easy: Ready in under 20 minutes!
- Versatile: Use any broth or drippings you have on hand.
- Customizable: Adjust the seasonings to your taste for the perfect flavor.
Instructions for my Homemade Gravy from Scratch:
- Heat the Fat:
Start by adding your fat (either drippings from your meat or butter) to a small or medium saucepan over medium heat. Allow it to melt completely. This is my favorite saucepan!
2. Make the Roux:
Once the fat is melted, whisk in the flour to create a roux. Continue whisking until the mixture becomes thick and bubbly, which should take about 1-2 minutes.
3. Add the Liquid Slowly:
Gradually pour in your broth or meat juices, just a little at a time. Keep whisking constantly to ensure no lumps form. As you pour in the liquid, the mixture will begin to thin out and smooth into a gravy consistency.
4. Season and Simmer:
Add salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder to taste. Continue whisking and cooking on low to medium heat until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.
5. Adjust the Thickness:
If the gravy becomes too thick, simply whisk in a little more broth or meat juices until it reaches the perfect consistency.
6. Serve Immediately:
Pour over mashed potatoes, roasted meats, or your favorite sides, and enjoy!

Tips for the Perfect Gravy
- Use Pan Drippings for Extra Flavor: If you’ve just roasted meat, don’t let those flavorful drippings go to waste! They add a deep, savory richness that broth alone can’t match. Just strain the drippings to remove any bits before using.
- Whisk Continuously: This is key to achieving a smooth texture without lumps.
- Adjust Seasonings to Taste: Gravy is all about flavor, so don’t be afraid to add more seasonings to get it just right.
